Balancing elements such as specialty physician practices, same-day surgery and physical therapy make a cookie-cutter approach to planning, programming. and wayfinding untenable. Real estate availability is also a challenge, which has led many medical facility developers to explore re-purposing unconventional buildings to meet their goals. So, what is the best approach to planning and site evaluation? Let's take a deeper look. The right location is critical to the success of the medical facility. Location affects the usability of imaging equipment such as MRIs; future system growth; and the ability to satisfy the needs of unique users — not to mention whether the building can be zoned for medical use at all. After helping several medical facilities re-purpose buildings for medical use, I've compiled the most essential considerations and real-world scenarios that arise in the evaluation and design process.
