Coloring Outside the Lines: The Intersection of Art, Design and Healthcare Innovation

Sunday, 10/06 | 3:15 PM-4:15 PM

SESSION E37, Wabash Ballroom 1: An integrated approach to the arts plays a crucial role in humanizing healthcare environments and acts as a catalyst for conversation, community engagement, and positive distraction. This session will go beyond proven benefits to help you understand the challenges in budgeting, composing, funding, and implementing an art program—as well as look ahead at how artificial intelligence (AI) could fuel personalized environments. From the lens of three perspectives—designer, client, and foundation executive—explore three projects that pushed the boundaries of traditional methodologies in embedding art within healthcare design.

Navigating Crisis: A Holistic Approach to Emergency & Behavioral Health Care Using an EmPATH Model

Monday, 10/07 | 9:30 AM-10:30 AM

SESSION E44, Location 103-104: Unveiling five examples of EmPATH units, presenters will provide a roadmap for attendees to navigate the planning, operational, and design considerations required by this model. Looking first at state-level grants, the session will connect the dots between legislation to fund these units and the realities health systems face operationally, drawing upon lessons learned in aligning those elements to better serve patients. Attendees will gain invaluable design insights and be introduced to a framework for interpreting regulations and innovating to establish solutions for an emerging care model.

Safety by Design: Applying Behavioral Health Design Principles to Protext Staff

Monday, 10/07 | 3:45 PM-4:45 PM

SESSION E57, Location 203-204: In 2018 alone, 73 percent of nonfatal workplace injuries were suffered by healthcare professionals, marking an 86 percent increase in just seven years. This rising rate of violence speaks to the importance of designing health facilities with an emphasis on safety. The question is: How do designers create spaces in which staff feel safe, comfortable, and positioned to work at the top of their licenses—all without compromises to patient experience? Thankfully, behavioral health design principles and strategies provide a roadmap for safety success that can be applied to a wide range of service lines.
